Utah Family Wedding Photographer

This week’s featured photographer is Brandon Burk of Brandon Burk Photography in Salt Lake City, Utah. Brandon is a wedding and portrait photographer, and has a knack for capturing those special moments between couples and families. He’s also an avid outdoorsmen, and says he rarely goes anywhere without his camera, tripod and other random items including his Carhartt jacket, beef jerky and a Diet Coke.

How did you get started in photography?

In high school I wanted a way to express myself artistically. I couldn’t draw or paint that well. Photography was the best way for me to create art. I knew that this was going to be my career of choice since my sophomore year of high school.

What has contributed to your success?

Paying attention to detail, customer service, communication, networking, organization and being energetic. I always strive to answer my phone calls 100 percent of the time. Missed phone calls equal missed business opportunities. Emails are replied to within 24 hours (common courtesy). One of my favorite business articles is written by Anthony Tjan entitled “Don’t Send That Email. Pick up the Phone!” This explains the importance of clear communication.

What is the most important thing for your continued success?

Staying on top of technology. A perfect example of a company that didn’t do this is Blockbuster. They didn’t see the new wave of the future and got wiped out by Netflix and Redbox.

What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?

My grandmother was a landscape painter. She explained to me once that sometimes artists want to hang onto their art and continually perfect it. In business this is bad because you can’t efficiently get the project done on time. To be a great artist and business owner you have to find the fine line of completing your art in a timely manner as well as making it look good. For me I have accomplished this by making sure I get everything correct in camera.

What is most important in your photography?

Showing each individual’s personality.

Is there anything else you’d like to add including workshops or products to recommend?

In my opinion, the best camera support system on the market is made by Hold Fast Gear. I fully endorse the company. Their product “The Money Maker” has allowed me to easily photograph with two camera bodies simultaneously. I have more lens diversity in my work and can get the job done a lot faster due to not having to change lenses.
