Featured Photographer: Zofia and Co.

April 24, 2012

We are thrilled to showcase some of Zofia & Co.’s work again. (See previous album design here.) Zofia Crosby owns Zofia & Co. on a little island off Cape Cod, Mass., called Nantucket along with her husband Mark. She shoots primarily on the island where the vibe is pretty traditional. But she breaks that stuffiness by making preppy look fun.

Zofia writes instructional posts and teaches workshops with ShootStyle (www.shootstyle.com), a small group of New England photographers who enjoy teaching and inspiring. Their next workshop is on May 17 at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, focusing on wedding portraits. Click here for more details. For more inspirational shots, check out their website. (Plus, stay tuned for a new site coming in a week or two!) But first, check out some gorgeous highlights and good advice below. Thanks Zofia & Co.!

How did you get started in Photography?:

It’s been so long, I can hardly remember! I was 13 when I got my first camera: a pink Barbie 110 format. I killed it fast and started shooting with my dad’s Canon T50. I took photography classes since junior high and went on to minor in Photography at UConn. I thought I would go to F.I.T. and study fashion and become the next David LaChapelle. Luckily I moved to a ski town instead and shot snowboarding, which somehow led to weddings in 1996.

What has contributed to your success?:

Perseverance and a love of the game. The high I get from doing a good job.

What is the most important thing for your continued success?:

See above. ;) Also, I try to stay current yet not trendy. I think it’s important in our field to avoid fads and keep classy yet fresh. It’s a fine line.

What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?:

Don’t get too comfortable. Keep improving, every day. You’re only as good as your last gig.

What is most important in your photography?:

My clients’ satisfaction, as well as my own. I want to do right by them as well as be proud of my work.

Who have been your influences in photography?

The greatest purist–Richard Avedon. Hands down.

How would you define your style of photography?

My wedding photography is definitely editorial, yet hopefully a bit fun and romantic as well.

What is one thing that has helped you grow your business?

Technology, for sure. I’m a big nerd. Digital was a HUGE turning point for me. I didn’t embrace it until 2005, shooting all film for 9 years prior. So glad I made the switch then!

What is one thing that has helped you grow as an artist?

Mentors. Looking up to people who have paved the way long before me and who are doing it right because they’re still relevant. And up and coming talents who are pushing limits.

What is one failure that helped you grow as a business person/artist?

Any mistake I make is a growing experience. It took awhile to see it that way, but I’m thankful for the bumps in the road because they only make me better.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to a person that is in the first few years of their photography business?

Become a photographer before you go into business. Study it, inside and out. Learn to photograph very WELL before you buy a domain name, you know what I mean.
