Tip of the Week – Adjustment Layers

July 16, 2012

Most basic adjustments to an image take place in Lightroom or Aperture. But there are quick ways to either tweak an image or add cool adjustments in Photoshop with Adjustment layers. Adjustment Layers can be found under the Layers menu or in your Adjustment palette in Photoshop.

Basic Adjustments

Sometimes when I’m editing in Lightroom I go pretty fast and then when I bring the image in to Photoshop, it might be a bit off. I don’t want to go back into Lightroom. I can quickly add an Adjustment Layer from the Layers menu or just use the Adjustment palette. Then I can dial in the exposure for example.

Gradient Maps

One of the best ways to create digital BW images is with gradient maps. The tonality is much better than anything available in any RAW processing programs. Just choose the Gradient Map adjustment layer. Then under the settings icon, you can choose different pre-made gradient maps. One is called Photographic Toning. These are fantastic. Then just choose your look and you are good to go. Record your favorite as an action and use it in Batch Editor or Action Hub.
